Mary Dilworth Turner
Hartwell, Georgia · 1940s–2025
Mary Dilworth Turner was an artist and art therapist who studied fine art and art education at the University of Georgia under Lamar Dodd — one of Georgia's most significant figures in American art history. Working across drawing, lithography, woodblock printmaking

Woodblock print · Framed · Signed Mary Dilworth Turner
A portrait of uncommon dignity. Mr. George stands holding corn — his hands as expressive as his face, the wood grain of the block becoming the grain of the world he inhabits. This is portraiture that remembers rather than poses.

Hand-colored woodblock print on paper · Signed, titled, and dated 1976–1977 · With handwritten margin notes in the artist's hand · 17" × 8"
The most significant single piece currently available from the Turner estate. Titled, dated, signed, and annotated in her own hand along the left margin — this is a primary document of her artistic identity, made in the year she was completing her studies under Lamar Dodd. The title is a declaration. The margin notes are a conversation with herself. The coloring is done directly over the print in her signature palette of rose, lavender, and warm orange.

Three woodblock impressions on a single sheet · Heavy kraft paper · Unsigned · 18" × 24"
Three pulls from the same block printed on a single sheet — a printer's proof document showing the consistency of the impression across the run. The composition is raw and powerful — four figures, horned and masked, confronting the viewer directly. This is among the most visually striking pieces in the collection and one of the clearest windows into her printmaking process.

Woodblock print · Dark brown ink on orange ground · Heavy paper · 15½" × 9½"
A single impression of the Primitive Woman composition on a warm orange substrate — the block printed in deep brown so the figures emerge from the color rather than from white space. The effect is entirely different from the black-on-kraft proof sheet — warmer, more grounded, closer to the earth. A strong standalone piece from the same series.
